A free gathering place
Root & Return is a free nonprofit resource offering nature-based and creative expression practices for anyone who has set themselves aside — and is ready to find their way back to their roots, their true self, and their own awakening.
What is Root & Return
Root & Return exists because we believe that everyone — regardless of income, background, ability, or circumstance — deserves access to tools that support their return to themselves.
These resources are offered freely and rooted in the wisdom of nature, creative expression, and the quiet intelligence that lives within each of us. Everything here emerges from lived experience — from the kind of depletion that comes from giving without receiving, from seasons of loss, and from the hard-won discovery that the self we thought we had lost was never truly gone.
It was only waiting in the roots.
Go inward through nature observation, reflection, and honest self-inquiry. Remember what has sustained you.
Give your inner life concrete form through writing, drawing, mapping, movement, and creative practice.
Integrate what you find. Make a conscious choice about how you want to live — and step into it.
"You don't have to find yourself. You need only return home to yourself — the path is already within you."— Kaeli Hansen
The Root & Return Journal
There is a you that has been waiting. Somewhere underneath the roles you have been playing, the stories you have been handed, and the ways you have learned to survive — that self is still there. Patient. Rooted. Welcoming you home.
This journal exists for one purpose: not to fix you, not to produce beautiful art, but to help you find your way back to your root — your very essence and soul — so that what has been waiting underground can finally find its way home to the light.
Root & Return is for everyone, regardless of ability, mobility, vision, hearing, or other differences. Every prompt is a starting point, not a requirement. If something doesn't work for your body or your life, adapt it freely.
The journal follows the natural arc of the tree itself:
Part One
Awareness. We go inward to root ourselves. We begin to remember what we have set aside.
Part Two
Action. We go underground together through creativity, nature, and honest reflection.
Part Three
Awakening. We rise. We integrate what we have found. We choose how to live going forward.
There is no wrong way to do this.
Begin here. There is nothing to prepare. You only need to show up.
Complete this at the beginning of Session One, and again at the close of your final session. The change — or the surprising lack of it — becomes its own reflection.
For each of the four directions below, rate yourself honestly from 1 to 5. There is no good shape or bad shape. It is simply true.
North
How clearly can I hear my own thoughts? Can you distinguish your own voice from the voices of obligation, worry, and others' expectations?
South
How present am I in my body today? Do you know where tension lives in you right now? Is your body a place you inhabit, or one you push through?
East
How connected do I feel to something larger than myself? This might be the divine, nature, community, creative force, or the quiet knowing beneath thought.
West
How freely can I feel and express what is true for me? Are your feelings accessible, or have they gone somewhere quiet to wait?
This practice begins every session in Root & Return. It is the first step toward the root — the moment of turning toward the outer world before turning inward.
This practice requires nothing except your attention. If you can go outside, go. If you can open a window, open it. If you are homebound, look from wherever you are — a window, a houseplant, the sky through glass, or a nature sound or image. Research confirms that even passive nature observation measurably restores wellbeing and reduces stress. Nature does not require a forest. It requires only that you look.
Find something in your environment — a rock, a tree, a plant, a bird, a cloud, a shaft of light through glass, the sound of wind or rain. Give it your full attention for two to three minutes. Do not analyze it. Simply receive it, as you would a gift from someone who loves you.
You are not writing for an audience. You are writing to find out what you actually think and feel. Freewrite if you can — let the pen move before the inner critic catches up.
What called you to this journal? What is happening in your life right now that made you pick it up?
A few honest, unpolished sentences are worth more here than a paragraph of careful explanation.
What did you choose to observe in nature, and why do you think that particular thing called to you today?
Write whatever first comes without stopping to edit.
Did anything in what you observed remind you of something in your own inner life right now?
Let the connection be whatever it is — literal, symbolic, or unexpected.
What do you hope to find — or remember — by the end of this journey?
Try not to think too hard. Write the first true thing that comes.
What ground rules do you want to set for yourself as you use this journal?
These are promises you make to yourself, not to anyone else.
A question to carry with you this week
"When do I feel most like my authentic self? What is happening in those moments?"
You do not need to answer this now. Carry it with you. Let it work on you quietly. Come back and write about it before Session Two.
A Reflection to Carry
I once sat under an oak tree in the deepest grief of my life and watched a branch that had been cut away sprout new shoots from the scar. I did not like what the tree was telling me. But eventually I accepted that sometimes a huge part of our lives must be removed for new growth to occur.
You have opened this journal. Something in you is already reaching toward the light. Be patient with the process. Roots take time.
Print the full journal session with writing space, the medicine wheel compass, and all prompts — to use by hand, at your own pace.
Root & Return exists because everyone deserves access to support — freely and without barriers. These resources are offered as a gift.
If what you've found here has resonated, and you're ready to go deeper through one-on-one coaching, workshops, or group journeys — that work happens at kaelihansen.com.
"Your support of the deeper work is what makes this free space possible. I'm grateful for both."
